Dear Diary, I Went Outside in My New Outfit Today
Weather: Nice enough for tiny paws
Mood: Brave, curious, and ready to be admired
Dear Diary,
Today, something unusual happened.
My human did not just pick up my leash.
My human also picked up a new outfit.
At first, I looked at the outfit. Then I looked at my human. Then I looked at the door.
I had many questions.
Are we going outside?
Am I wearing that?
Will there be snacks?
Will everyone notice me?
My human smiled, which usually means something good is about to happen.
The Outfit Inspection
Before I wear anything, I must inspect it.
This is a very serious dog rule.
I sniffed the fabric. I sniffed the buttons. I sniffed the place where my human had been holding it.
It smelled soft. It smelled new. It smelled like a little adventure waiting to happen.
My human said, “You are going to look beautiful.”
I wagged my tail once.
Not too much.
I did not want to seem too easy to impress.
Getting Ready
My human helped me get dressed very gently.
I stood still for almost three whole seconds, which is a long time for a dog with important things to do.
The outfit felt soft on my body. It did not squeeze me. It did not make my legs feel strange. I could still walk, turn around, sit down, and look dramatically into the distance.
This was good.
A dog must always be able to look dramatically into the distance.
The Mirror Test
Then came the mirror.
I walked past it slowly.
Then I stopped.
There was a very stylish little dog looking back at me.
For one second, I thought, “Who is that?”
Then I realised.
It was me.
I turned my head a little.
The stylish dog turned too.
I lifted one paw.
The stylish dog lifted one paw.
I decided we were both beautiful.
The Walk Begins
We stepped outside.
The world smelled busy.
Grass. Flowers. Pavement. Someone’s lunch. A dog who had walked by earlier and clearly had many opinions.
I walked with confidence.
My human held the leash.
I held the responsibility of looking adorable.
A lady passed us and smiled.
“Oh my goodness,” she said. “What a cute outfit!”
I pretended I did not hear.
But my tail heard.
My tail wagged immediately.
The Compliment Problem
Diary, I discovered something today.
Compliments are very powerful.
Every time someone said I looked cute, my body became wigglier.
I tried to stay calm and elegant, but it was difficult.
A child pointed at me.
Another human smiled.
Someone asked my human where my outfit was from.
My human looked proud.
I looked away like a celebrity who is used to attention.
Inside my head, I was dancing.
Outside my body, I was also almost dancing.
My paws are not very good at hiding feelings.
A Very Important Sniff
Halfway through our walk, I found a very interesting patch of grass.
It had many layers.
Morning dog. Afternoon bird. Mystery smell. Possible sandwich memory.
I lowered my nose.
I sniffed carefully.
My human waited.
This is love.
Love is when someone lets you sniff the same spot for longer than they understand.
I almost forgot I was wearing a special outfit.
But then another person said, “Look at that little dog!”
And I remembered.
I was not only sniffing.
I was sniffing fashionably.
Back Home
When we came home, my paws were tired and my heart was full.
My human helped me take off my outfit and folded it carefully.
I watched closely.
I wanted to make sure it would be ready for next time.
Then I drank water, walked in a circle, and found my favourite sleeping place.
I curled up.
My human touched my head softly.
I closed my eyes.
Final Thought Before Sleep
Dear Diary, I think I liked today.
I liked the walk.
I liked the smells.
I liked the compliments.
I liked how happy my human looked when people noticed me.
But most of all, I liked feeling loved.
Maybe that is what a good outfit does.
It does not change who I am.
It just helps the world see a little more of me.
Goodnight, Diary.
With tired paws and a happy tail,
A very proud little dog
